Is CBD the Future of Pain Management?
What do professional athletes, gym fanatics, and aging seniors have in common? They all experience pain in a variety of ways.
Coincidentally, CBD has become wildly popular amongst these individuals, and for good reason.
CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and highly effective for pain management. In fact, pain management is what a majority of people use CBD for.
While the industry is still developing and there is still more research to be done, research and the personal experiences of real individuals has shown very promising results.
Could CBD be the future for pain management? Many think so.
In this article, let’s explore how CBD helps improve pain management and discuss the amazing potential CBD can have for pain and recovery applications.
What is CBD
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of at least 85 active compounds identified in the Cannabis plant known as cannabinoids.
CBD can be extracted from Cannabis as an isolated compound independent of the other cannabinoids, or as a whole plant extract that contains a range of different cannabinoids.
In an isolated state, CBD is non-intoxicating and can deliver a range of natural benefits without the mind-altering effects associated with “getting high.” In fact, studies have shown that CBD can actually alleviate the psychoactive effects induced by Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the intoxicating component of Cannabis.
How Can CBD Help with Pain Management
Pain can come in variety of forms including nociceptive pain (caused by damage to the tissues, muscles, joints, tendons, or bones), neuropathic pain (caused by damage to the nervous system), and inflammatory pain (caused by inflammation to the tissues, muscles, joints, tendons, or bones).
Each type of pain can be chronic (long-lasting, typically longer than 3-6 months), or acute pain (lasting typically within 3-6 months).
While acute pain can be treated with simple solutions such as acetaminophen (otherwise known as Tylenol) and some good rest, chronic pain can last for very long periods of time and is often unbearable.
Based on the findings from numerous studies, CBD can provide relief for a wide range of pain.
According to a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD proves to have anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antiemetic, anxiolytic properties, positioning it as an agent for relieving many ailments, one of which is chronic pain.
In addition, CBD has shown to significantly help management by activating our body’s Vanilloid receptor – the receptor known to mediate pain perception, inflammation, and body temperature.
By activating various receptors in the Endocannabinoid System, experts have found that patients treated with CBD experience a “clinically significant reduction” in pain-related symptoms with little to no adverse side effects.
And, it’s not just research indicating that CBD can provide significant relief to chronic pain. Hundreds of people who regularly use CBD to manage their chronic pain tell their stories every day. And as the research continues, the evidence will continue to prove that what these people are raving about is true.
So is CBD the future of pain management? Research studies and the personal experiences of real-life people seem to indicate that it just might be.
